Media Literacy

Course overview

Class Objective Students will analyze, evaluate and create media messages in a wide variety of modes, genres and forms. They will learn to question what they watch, see, listen to and read.

The National Association for Media Literacy Education defines Media literacy as “the ability to ACCESS, ANALYZE, EVALUATE, CREATE, and ACT using all forms of communication. In its simplest terms, media literacy builds upon the foundation of traditional literacy and offers new forms of reading and writing. Media literacy empowers people to be critical thinkers and makers, effective communicators and active citizens.” Basically, we are looking to read more critically by:

  • appreciating that these skills are important and necessary.
  • build off of books to develop reading skills with sophisticated, non-book mediums.
  • put together images, words, and sounds as a way of communicating.
  • realize our reading requires critical thinking skills that empower us.
  • discuss the impact of media and technology.
